Get to Know Me

Howdy! My name is Hollander Bishoff and I hail from Springfield, OR. I originally was dual enrolled at OSU and LBCC with a focus in Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences. After struggling with the courses due to lack of interest I realized that wasn't what I wanted to. I ended up taking some time away from school and now as I go back into I realized I want to do something related to writing or english, but what exactly I do not yet know.

Outside of School I love to read, write, hike and go bird watching. I think that reading is one of the most important things you can do, not only does it open you to new and different ideas but it also helps to expand your lexicon and grow your mind. Most recently some of the books I have read are 1984, Beren and Luthien, and Animal Farm. Writing ties closely with reading to me. Whether writing down ideas in my head for a book I may want to publish some day or thoughts on books I have recently read I think it is important to jot down thoughts and ideas. Hiking and birding for me fall hand in hand. Often times while hiking I find myself slowing down to watch the birds. I have been fond of birds for as long as I can remember and will frequently take pictures of them for myself or to share.

I am most interested to learn about how media plays a role in our society. I am looking forward to learning more about how media has evolved and changed over recent years and how those changes have affected the views of the people who see them. I am also interested to see how journalism has changed over the years with the rise of social media. My Grandfather was a Journalist for the Register Guard in Eugene for ~35 years and it is fascinating to hear and see how much has changed since he was a journalist, something I am eager to learn more about.

I consider my three main sources of news to be Instagram, YouTube and Podcasts. I consider these sources to be reliable, not so much because of what they are but because of who I follow on them. It is the people I follow and not so much that apps themselves that make me feel they are trustworthy sources. With the rise in AI, more and more frequently I see "deep fakes" and fake news on these platforms but especially Instagram. With most media I take in a look for other sources, not only to make sure the news I take in is real but also to see different views and opinions. I think it is important to stay informed with what is going on, especially if I plan to share that information with other people.
